At today’s TDX test put on by the Hyattsville Dog Training Club, Cappy was the only dog out of six to pass.
It was a great day for tracking—cool and overcast. We drew Track 2.
We walked to about 10 yards to the start flag where I hooked him to his harness. I told him to “Find It” and Cappy went to the flag and took the scent from the start article. He then proceeded down the track at a pace that assured him and me that he was actually on the track. We got to the first turn, which he handled well, and then suddenly picked up his pace to a decent trot. Soon he found the first article.
He blew by the cross tracks and went down a hillside into a low area adjacent to woods. Here he took his time to figure out which way to go, and after a minute or so made the correct decision to go right with the woods at our left. Then we found the second article.
Soon another turn took us left into the woods, which he handled very well. After a brief exploration to our right and deciding that wasn’t correct, he got back on the track and after a short distance made a correct right turn to head out of the woods, but not until he had to maneuver over four to five downed trees, one of which I opted to help him get over due to its size.
Once out of the woods and back onto the open field, we went another 30 yards and found the glove. The track was 875 yards and he finished in 14 minutes. I can’t say how proud I am of this boy!
